Captivity
Lemurs have been kept in capitivity successfully for many years. While conditions in captivity can vary from zoo to zoo, some like the San Francisco Zoo in California, USA features several tree-enclosures. The Lipman Family Lemur Forest is a large, multi-sectional enclosure featuring tall, live trees, an artifical tree-fort, and an elevated boardwalk that allows visitors to the zoo to see all the exciting lemur activity. Most important to the lemurs, the lemur enclosure also features several heat lamps for those chilly San Francisco days.
Not to be out done by their neighbors to the south, the Edmonton Valley Zoo in Edmonton, Canada has recently built the Makira Outpost in 2007. The new facility is designed to incoporate both greener technology while making the visitor feel as close to the lemurs as never before.
Many zoos have lemur families in their collections. Be sure to stop by and support your local zoo and its conservation efforts.
